I'm looking to build (or buy a base model and upgrade to EBR), but I honestly don't know where to begin. I've got some ideas, but I figured there's be some experts on here that could give me a few pointers as to what stock, bolt, trigger group, barrel and other main items to get started. Not too concerned with accessories as of yet, Just want to get started purchasing the components and build it up gradually. Thanks!

Dave,
I have owned several M1A variants and to be honest, I parted with them eventually only because of an employment issue.
I owned several Norinco models and they would out shoot me anyday. I know there are a lot of internet myths about soft steel, etc. but they have their root in one online company trying to protect their fifedom.
Anyway, the platform has a lot going for it, but honestly, if I'm dropping 1200+ on a MBR its gonna be an AR10. Having owned both, the M1A definately wins in the nostalgia category, but the AR10 wins everything else, hands down. Even better, you can get a 260 Remington upper built and run both uppers on one lower.
Top three reasons:
Ergonomics
Easier to scope more accurately
more plentiful accesories /cheaper
If you are set on the M1A, don't look down our nose at the norincos and other knock offs. you can put more money into the build if you get the chasis cheap.

I've been looking at doing an AR-10 as well, with 2 uppers, one 20" barrel and one 16" barrel, with the appropriate buffers, so I can switch them out as needed in just a few minutes. The issue I have with getting AR-10 stuff, is I can't figure out the compatibility issues between DPMS, Bushmaster, etc, and some take G3 mags or whatever. Its all so confrusing!
I wish I had the $$ to just drop on a $1600 rifle, but A) my wife would kill me and B) most of my extra money goes into the business. Hence, I need to build one from the ground up, piece by piece. Then again, I hear banjos are great for zombie killing, too...

ANother more economical option, if your willing to come over to the dark side, is the Saiga S-308. This is what I use now as my MBR. I have a 16" version with a folder that rides with me everyday and a 22" with a collapsible that sees a lot of action in our Tac Rifle Matches...
They've been around a while now and have proven themselves (to me), although they've never been fielded by a country in service (that I know of).
SureFire makes hi cap 25 round mags that are erasonably priced and the guns themselves are retailing around $550.00 or so. They come into the US in an awkward hunting config to get around the import ban. However, they are easily converted to modern Ak PG configuration with a few parts and about 2 hours work.

Larry
While doing IM to you I looked at your posts and noted that you like the M14, so I figured you like to see some work I did. I've been using the M14 for a long time, in competition and for fun, here is a link with pictures to some work I did to turn an M14 into an EBR, scroll down till you see the poster garilla (me) There is also some paint jobs on there that I did too.
